- Alex Fitzharris - Environmental Protection
- Scottish Agricultural College, Aberdeen
- Hannah Wain, November 2006
- Overall rating
- Course content *****
- Alex Fitzharris became interested in environmental matters on a visit to the USA where he worked on various conservation projects. "I enjoy the mix of practical and theoretical components in the course, and the links between environmental protection and practical land management. I took part in the agriculture field trip to Poland between my third and fourth years and it was interesting to see the importance placed on agriculture in Poland and the differences in standards of environmental protection between there and the UK ."

- "I was looking for a job in the environment industry when I quickly realised I needed a suitable qualification before I could find a job that I wanted. I chose this course because I have always had a conscience about the environment and feel we should try to live our lives as much as possible in harmony with the laws of nature. Working in the field of environmental management will hopefully enable me to make a positive difference. I found out about SAC through friends. The course seemed exciting - I've been here for over a year now and I'm loving it! everything is far exceeding my expectations - it's interesting, stimulating, very well taught and well focused on my future career."

- The course is ideal for anyone wishing to obtain an excellant qualification in Facility Management [FM]. It offers up to date mangement skills expected at a senior level within any organisation and as its a taught master degree entry is flexible. The lectures are on Wednesdays 2pm-6.30pm in the first academic year and same times but Thursday in the second [final] year. The pace is good and as long as the student remembers that contact hours need to be matched it should be OK for adults to keep up the commitment.

- Course content *****
- I've studied several courses with the Open University and this was by far and away the best; it exceeded my expectations. I found the material extremely varied and interesting and ideal for someone with my short attention span! Some concepts were new and quite hard to understand (extreme views for instance) but I got there, and I had no background in social sciences whatsoever. Although distance learning isn't for everyone, this course kept me fascinated from start to finished, and I had to sit the exam overseas unexpectedly but I still passed. This is a post-grad course and that was quite clear from the expectations of the course, but I'd recommend it as a module of any degree with any social science aspect as it's an eye-opener, even for wide-eyed people like me.
- Student facilities *****
- The resources for this are your own, through the internet, and all the recommended media. I found this extremely well thought out to help the student make the best use of available resources considering that it's distance learning.
- Social life *****
- Okay, so there isn't a class, but you can meet up with other students on study days, and through the OU Student's Association. Socially it's a broad spectrum, much wider than in college because the students come from all over the country and all walks of life.

- Course content *****
- The course material is very relevant and up to date with recent research undertaken at UEA incorporated into the course. Some units can be hard but with a bit of effort and dedication and some support from tutors and lecturers everything will be fine. You can be a complete beginner as long as you are prepared to put in a bit more effort. Employment prospects from this degree course are excellent, or there is the opportunity of research degrees.
- Student facilities *****
- Lecture theatres can be a bit daunting as some of them are huge, but they are fine and most lecturers use powerpoint now so you can see even at the back! The smaller lecture theatres are better and more conducive to asking questions. The labs are well equipped and staffed and PC facilities are very good; they are dotted all over the place.
- Social life ****
- UEA is a very sociable place as it's a relatively small university. There are lots of clubs and societies to join. Class size can vary between 10 in the third year to 100 in the first year for the more popular units. There are plenty of places for socialising and meeting up afterwards to discuss coursework or other important issues!
